Montenegro after the Commission’s Opinion

The EPC is pleased to invite you to a Policy Briefing with Gordana Djurovic, Minister for European Integration, Montenegro, on Tuesday 7 December, 14.30-15.30 (registration from 14.15)

at Max Kohnstamm room, 4th floor, Résidence Palace, Rue de la Loi 155, 1040 Brussels

The recent positive European Commission Opinion suggesting Montenegro become a candidate country for EU accession makes this a timely occasion to look ahead to the challenges facing the country. The Commission’s assessment commends Montenegro’s progress in consolidating the rule of law and stable institutions, but important lacunae remain. First and foremost, more needs to be done to combat organised crime and corruption - problems which plague the Balkans as a whole and about which the EU is particularly concerned.

While waiting for the European Council to rubberstamp Montenegro’s candidate status, what short and long-term strategies will the government adopt to address these issues ? Can Montenegro maintain the pace of progress and overcome the problems common to most Balkan countries regarding the implementation of reform ? Ms. Djurovic will give her view on these questions and the challenges facing Montenegro on the road to the opening of accession negotiations. The Briefing will be chaired by Rosa Balfour, Senior Policy Analyst at the EPC.
