The local elections in North Macedonia in late October saw the conservative VMRO-DPMNE win almost every major city in the country, including the capital Skopje. Having said after the first round of local elections that he would resign if the opposition took the capital, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev followed through on his promise and also renounced his leadership of the ruling SDSM. While Zaev will remain in the job until the situation stabilises, many questions remain about the future internal political dynamics and the country’s European integration process.

What are the likely scenarios for the incumbent government and opposition ? Does the local elections result signal a shift in public opinion regarding the government’s pro-EU agenda ? Are early national elections likely to take place ? How will the vote determine the country’s future in terms of its European priorities ? Will North Macedonia be able to keep up the EU integration momentum ?

This Policy Briefing will address these and other questions.

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO EPC MEMBERS, EU OFFICIALS AND THE MEDIA .
