Faring well through the pandemic :
Greek e-governance and plans for a digital recovery

Kyriakos Pierrakakis
Minister of Digital Governance, Hellenic Republic

The European Policy Centre is pleased to invite you to this online Sixty Minute Briefing with Greek Minister of Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis. It will look at the Greek experience during the pandemic and the country’s programme for boosting e-governance and digitalisation.

In the aftermath of the pandemic, the Greek government has put forward ambitious plans for boosting e-governance at home, as well as proposals for facilitating vaccination through the implementation of digital certificates. Digital solutions provide an important resource for an effective recovery, and here the pandemic offers a rare opportunity for growth. But how will Greece and other member states that score below the EU average in the European Commission’s Digital Economy and Society Index deal with increased digitalisation and the inherent challenges of data protection, privacy, inclusiveness and upholding fundamental rights during the pandemic ? Are current EU legislative proposals moving in the right direction to empower all member states in their bids to develop effective e-governance that facilitates data exchanges about public governance matters ?

Besides these topics, Minister Pierrakakis will also address the country’s use of digital tools in dealing with the fallout of the pandemic and the government’s plans to allocate a significant part of the EU Recovery Fund for digital growth. Following a keynote speech, there will be time for questions and answers from the audience. Andreas Aktoudianakis, EPC Policy Analyst, will moderate the event.
