Dejan Jović, political scientist, professor, Faculty of Political Science, University of Zagreb. Former advisor to Croatia’s president Ivo Josipovic.
Antonija Petričušić, lawyer and sociologist, assistant professor at the Chair of Sociology, Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, Croatia. Her recent research focuses on the rise of neo-conservatism in Croatia and the use of the judicial field as an instrument for legitimising conservative values.
Background
The parliamentary elections in Croatia, to be held on 5 July 2020, are scheduled several months ahead of time. Some analysts think that early date was chosen in order to avoid the impact of the anticipated economic crisis, that may strike hard at the end of the tourist season, if the international tourists do not come in significant numbers.
Political parties to the left and to the right of the political spectrum have been splintering. Although their economic programs are not diametrically divergent, their political rhetoric seems to be shifting towards debating the values exposed by the far right : women’s reproductive rights (even in rape cases, abortion should be discussed in family), revision of history and mainstreaming of the Croatian version of fascism (ustaša), ethnic intolerance, church influence, etc.
